I started a four year apprenticeship with an award winning local firm in 1998 and continued with them until 2009. At this point I wanted to broaden my knowledge of the craft and see how other thatchers work, so I became self employed and worked as a journeyman for a number of thatchers from Oxfordshire to Norfolk. After a year I found I was picking up more of my own work and in 2010 started Grant Batchelor Master Thatcher Ltd. My aim was to offer the best craftsmanship, coupled with an exceptional service and I have been going from strength to strength every year.
I now employ three other thatchers, one of which I completed the training of and has been with me for 6 years the other two are both apprentices, learning the craft over 4 years.
I am a proud member of the National Society of Master Thatchers, and take a very active role, having been voted in as a director. I feel membership is crucial, as each thatchers work is thoroughly scrutinised before being awarded membership. It is inexpensive to be a member of the NSMT and if a thatcher is not a member then you have to ask the question- why not?
I take great pride in our work, and have a real love for the craft. But a great thatched roof is not everything. I believe that service is just as important, turning up when I say, finishing when I say, keeping the customer informed, and going above and beyond expectations. Having a roof thatched is big work, but I strive to make it as easy as possible for the client.
